An estimate for savings outside super only. It leaves out super, the Age Pension and tax, uses one steady return, and is not a forecast.
How this is calculated
The number is yearly spending divided by the withdrawal rate. At 4% that is 25 times spending, so $50,000 a year gives $1,250,000.
The age comes from growing your invested savings month by month at the return you set, adding the monthly amount (raised each year with inflation), and finding the first month the balance, in today’s dollars, reaches the number.
- Return (7% by default): an average after fees, before tax. Real returns vary, and a poor run early in retirement does more harm than one steady rate shows.
- Inflation (2.5%): the middle of the RBA’s 2 to 3% target. It turns future dollars into today’s.
- Withdrawal rate (4%): a US rule of thumb for a 30 year retirement, not a guarantee. Lower is more cautious.
Super is generally locked until 60, so it is not projected here. Results are estimates, returns are not guaranteed, and nothing here suggests a product or an action.
