Read-only by design

A read-only personal finance app: it can show your money but never move it.

Finsplore is read-only. It shows you information about your money and has no way to move it: it cannot make payments, transfer money, pay bills or change anything at your bank, and it never asks for your bank password.

The same goes for AI assistants. Finsplore Connect, coming soon, will let an assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot or Claude read your Finsplore data and suggest changes to Finsplore's own records, and every change waits for your approval. No assistant can move money at a bank.

What does read-only mean?

Read-only means information flows one way. Finsplore takes in the statements you import and shows you what they say. Nothing goes from Finsplore to your bank.

Finsplore does not hold your money and is not a bank. Any change that involves real money, such as moving savings into another account, is something you do yourself in your own bank's website or app.

What Finsplore cannot do

  • Transfer money, make payments or pay bills.
  • Set up direct debits or change anything at your bank.
  • See or store your bank password. Finsplore never asks for it.
  • Give financial advice or recommend financial products. It shows general information about your own numbers.

What Finsplore can do

Within Finsplore, you can import statements, see your accounts, spending, net worth and goals in one place, set budgets and goals, and change your own records, for example fixing a transaction's category. Those are changes to your Finsplore data, not to your bank.

Finsplore can show how you are tracking against a budget or a goal. What to do about it stays with you.

Why does read-only matter for safety?

An app that cannot act on your bank accounts cannot be used to send money out of them. What is at stake is what the app can see, and Finsplore also recommends two-factor sign-in and lets you delete your account and data at any time.

It is also why you can import a statement file instead of handing over a banking login. You decide which files to share, one at a time.

What about AI assistants?

Finsplore Connect is coming soon and is not switched on yet. When it is, an AI assistant you already use, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot or Claude, or any app that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), will be able to read your Finsplore data and suggest changes to it.

You choose what each assistant may do. Reading and changing are separate permissions. A change an assistant suggests waits for your approval in Finsplore before anything happens, and deleting things, changing many items at once and changing accounts only you can approve. Every request is logged, and you can disconnect an assistant at any time.

An assistant can never move money, make payments or delete your account. Those are not exposed to assistants at all. Once data reaches an assistant it is handled under that company's terms and may be stored outside Australia, so check the assistant's own privacy settings before you connect it.

What are "writes" in Finsplore?

A write is a change to Finsplore's own records, such as a new budget, a goal or a corrected category. Writes are about your Finsplore data only. They have no connection to your bank.

When an assistant suggests a write, it waits for your approval before anything happens, and a suggestion that is not approved within 10 minutes expires.
